From baseball great Hank Aaron to the Zimmermann note used to convince the U.S. Congress to declare war on Germany in World War I, Cornelison and Yanak (educators and curriculum planners with the California public school system) present 2,200 brief entries describing various events, places, people, and institutions important to American history. The reference is about as heavy on culture (and pop-culture) as it is on more traditional historical topics, which sometimes leads to odd choices. For example, there are entries for comedian George Burns and actor Paul Newman, but none for Huey P. Newton or his Black Panther Party (although there is an entry on Black Power). The text also includes physical and political maps of the United States, demographic data, lists of Presidents and Supreme Court Justices, and reproductions of the expected historical documents.
