At twenty-six, Brian Schwan is washed up. Four years hacking away on third-rate golf courses across the South have netted him a grand total of $19,000 in earnings, zero wins, and the ironic nickname "Clutch," in honor of a string of spectacular tournament flameouts. His wife wants him to come home and start a family. His father who pushed him into the sport, seems to have given up on him. And he's just shot the worst opening round of his life while watching his playing partner blister the course and rewrite the record books. Everything is crumbling around him. Before he can slink back to his motel room and regroup, however Brian finds himself glibly granting a TV interview to a flirtatious reporter who has mistaken him for his record-setting partner. Worse yet, Brian maintains his absurd impersonation even after the camera stops rolling. He arranges a date with his charming inquisitor for later that night. After all, he reasons, one dead dream deserves another so why not ruin both career and marriage at the same time? But over the course of the evening and the next day, Brian discovers that self-destruction is no more certain than success, and that no plan - whether noble or base - works as intended.
