Sanders (an architect, he was co-writer of a recent lengthy documentary on New York City) has compiled a hefty volume about depictions of New York in the movies. The movie version is compared with the real thing, whether the depiction is of rooftops, courtyards, dream versions of the city, skyscrapers, streets, nighttime, wartime, and so on. Sanders recounts the story line of the scenes that contain these features, but the main interest of the book is the cumulative picture of the city itself, both in fact and in our imaginations.
