Venice is one of the most beautiful and photogenic cities in the world. Its fragile charm can only be hinted at in a conventional book of photographs. The large-format and pull-out panoramas of Venice [actual symbol not reproducible] enable it to capture this most evocative of places perfectly. The photographer Attilio Boccazzi-Varotto has used the same rotating camera that produced the images seen in New York [actual symbol not reproducible], the predecessor to this volume in the series. The results are spectacular. This book covers Venice and its environs, recording the piazzas, buildings, canals, and bridges in beautifully reproduced images on a grand scale. There are fifty-five photographs in all. Many are double-page spreads, and some are larger still. The panoramas taken from the Trevisian Bridge and of the Grand Canal cover four spectacular pages; Burano is pictured across a five-page spread; and a six-page view of the city takes in many of its most familiar sights - the outlying islands, the entrance to the Grand Canal, the Doge's Palace, and the harbor. From Torcello to St. Mark's, from the campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore and across the Accademia Bridge, Venice is portrayed at its dazzling best. Each photograph is accompanied by an explanatory caption that identifies the landmarks pictured and gives some of their historical and artistic context.
