This slim, well-illustrated volume showcases the rich holdings of the Sackler (the history of its collection is described in the introduction) in three scholarly essays on Islamic manuscripts and pottery. The contributors are all art historians; their essays consider Mughal portraits of rulers in the company of holy men, discussing the importance of the Sufi shayks to Akbar and others; methods used in the descriptive drawings of 15th and 16th-century Iran; and the contents of Samanid epigraph pottery. The latter essay provides a table summarizing the blessings by theme. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
