The Hybrid III is a 50th percentile, adult male crash test dummy that was developed by General Motors in the 1970s to improve the biofidelity and the injury prediction measurement capacity of mechanical human simulations used in automotive occupant restraint testing. On November 13, 1990, GM petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to make the Hybrid III the only dummy allowed for FMVSS 208 compliance testing. In anticipation of favorable action by NHTSA on the GM petition and to understand more thoroughly occupant interaction with various types of restraints, especially air bags, all the domestic car manufacturers and most of the foreign car manufacturers are now using the Hybrid III in new vehicle development programs. This volume describes the important characteristics of the dummy and documents the basis of work used in its development. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
