The authors describe lessons learned from the work of 13 superintendents who are members of the governing board of the Minority Student Achievement Network and have made progress in closing the opportunity and achievement gaps in US public schools. They draw on interviews with these superintendents from 2011 to detail how they became involved in addressing achievement gaps, their understanding of the causes, how they chose to respond to equity challenges, and their assessment of their progress and success. The authors explain the development and history of the Minority Student Achievement Network and the background of the superintendents, as well as similarities and differences in their school districts, followed by a framework addressing the challenges and opportunities in achievement gaps and its application to analysis of strategies used by the superintendents, such as systemic strategies that ensure organizational capacity, stability, and learning and align the perspectives of the school board, superintendent, and community, as well as teacher professional development, opportunities for students, and addressing barriers and threats to the equity agenda.
