This is a paperbound reprint of a 1999 book (U. of New Mexico Press). In this abridged edition of Luhan's four-volume memoirs, Rudnik, (American Studies, University of Massachusetts, Boston) selected passages that illuminate her life: a short marriage and early widowhood, subsequent remarriage in Europe, bouts with clinical depression, and friendships with Gertrude Stein, Emma Goldman, Isadora Duncan, D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cathar and a host of artists like Matisse and Picasso. Eventually she married again and settled in Taos, New Mexico, where she worked for better living conditions for the Pueblo people and helped make Taos the artistic center it remains. Her memoirs, ego-centric though they may be, provide an unvarnished image, her experience with early Freudian psychiatry making it obligatory for her to discuss intimate feelings and events. This is compelling reading of a life that the writers she knew borrowed from in creating characters for their works. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
