Description

Polish Jew Isay Rottenberg took over a failing cigar factor in Germany in 1932, six months before the Nazis gained power. Freelance journalists Hella Rottenberg and Sandra Rottenberg are granddaughters of Isay Rottenberg; they did not know their grandfather’s history until 2017. In this accessible narrative, the granddaughters interweave their grandfather’s story with their own journey as they traveled Europe seeking information on Isay Rottenberg and meeting relatives they never knew they had. They chronicle Isay Rottenberg’s struggle to regain his factory after it was expropriated by the Nazis through the Deutsche Bank. The book contains a list of persons, a family tree, and a glossary of political parties, trade organizations, and Nazi terminology. B&w historical photos and posters are included.
