Ten contributing political scientists and experts on Latin America and international studies analyze the challenges faced by the five countries that make up the Andean region: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. In each of the countries, at least one of the three pillars necessary for stability--national security, democracy, and economic health--is in crisis. The volume uses the idea of balancing all three pillars, or achieving the "elusive trinity," as a conceptual framework for understanding the complexity of the politics, economics, and societal forces at work in the Andes.
