Waite (emeritus, family medicine, Michigan State U.) asserts that there is a burgeoning business in environmental alarmism about global warming, alar poisoning, DDT runoff, Love Canal upsludge, and overpopulation, as well as Marxist and New Age Godlessness: "The New Age Movement worships Lucifer instead of God...." He also loathes (most?) federal regulation: "When a substance or process is banned [by the federal government] it is usually replaced with one that is less efficient, more toxic and invariably more costly." True dangers, says Waite, have not garnered proper attention: for example, the flame retardant, Tris, mandated by a federal act, later found to be a carcinogen, then banned in children's sleepwear. Waite's other dangers are murderous airbags, ineffective seat belts, smokestack scrubbers to reduce sulfur emissions for a nonexistent acid rain problem, and other misguided attempts to do good.
