Proceedings of a symposium held in October 1995. The 60 articles are divided into sections on the pathology, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, molecular genetics, animal models, and clinical aspects and treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The section on pathology covers recent advances in the cytopathology of motorneurons. In epidemiology, the increasing incidence of ALS in industrialized countries, and its contrasting decline in the Western Pacific are reviewed. Then, advances in etiopathogenesis, including autoimmunity and excitotoxic amino acids, are discussed. The next two sections review the discovery of SOD1 mutations, and the concluding articles cover clinical techniques, including MRI, and current management of ALS.
