Offering advice for policy makers, managers, and scientists, this report introduces the US Geological Survey (USGS) and discusses its history and its mission and vision statements. It identifies forces that influence the USGS, considers how the USGS might evolve to meet future needs, and discusses the administrative challenges the agency will face. Recommendations are given involving emphasis on national priorities, responsiveness to social, political, and economic needs, coordination on monitoring and forecasting critical phenomena such as volcanic activity, the use of system modeling, and provision of natural resource information.
