Lupu (classical studies, George Washington U.) begins with a practical guide to the corpus of Greek sacred laws for the general classicist, avoiding theoretical exposition. Then he collects the sacred laws from mainland Greece, the colonies, and the islands, but not from Cos or Asia Minor, that have been published after the appearance of Sokolowski's Lois sacrées des cités grecques in 1969, along with a few earlier onces that were not included there. An occasional stipulation on the subject of religion or cult practiced does not necessarily make a document a sacred law, he warns, but admits that some cases are difficult to place confidently on one side or the other of the line. Each Greek text is accompanied by footnotes and followed by epigraphical commentary, an English translation, and general commentary. Lupu proposes the anthology be hailed NGSL, for New Greek Sacred Laws. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
