When authorities in Brescia passed an ordinance against ruinous costs and useless customs at funerals in 1505, the local Dominicans complained that the statute infringed upon ecclesiastical liberty. In response, Brescian humanists wrote a series of pamphlets not only defending the law, but also placing the controversy in a much wider political and philosophical context. Bowd (history, U. of Edinburgh) and Cullington, a scholar of classics and music, present two of the pamphlets, the statute itself, and the Dominican objection in Italian with facing English translation. The series is published by the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
