The Chinese beef industry is examined in this study to give a picture of the future of economic integration and regionalism in China. The beef industry was chosen for its localized mass market and specialized inter-regional premium market, its widespread but changing distribution, and its role as a new industry to raise household and regional incomes. The study examines the impacts of market forces, industry characteristics, relative factor endowments, and government influence on the spatial organization of activities, and assesses the beef industry in 12 key producing provinces.
