While the literary world is filled with international cookbooks, as well as cookbooks for children, none combine both features as does Multicultural Cookbook of Life-Cycle Celebrations. Webb covers the celebrations and the recipes that take a person from cradle to grave. Arranged by region and country, the latest multicultural cookbook is an ideal resource for all classes that use culinary customs to bolster curriculums, presenting more than 250 authentic recipes, it includes interesting introductions about each celebration.

This educational but non-academic international cookbook begins with a 17-page introduction on the major religions' life-cycle rituals. The cookbook itself is sectioned into continents or regions, and then nations, where an introduction to the particular country's life-cycle events (birth, puberty, marriage, death) precedes selected recipes. For example, Israel is listed along with its Arab neighbors under the category of the Middle East and the prefatory text on Israel explains, for example, the kosher and marriage laws, as well as Sabbath practices. Following the text are eight recipes for such foods as challah (egg bread) and kreplach (dumplings). The unfortunate aspect of the volume is that particular foods are not always directly tied to particular rites of passage; in other words, the book would have greatly benefited from a menu of dishes served on particular occasions. A non-comprehensive glossary of cooking tools and food is featured. Webb is a restaurant consultant and caterer. No bibliography or notes are included. Annotation c.
