Canadian mathematician and writer Bonato is a professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. His book presents 12 interviews with international mathematicians, aiming to learn their stories: What were their influences? What drives them to devote their lives to the discovery of the new mathematics. What will mathematics look like in the future? Bonato’s blog The Intrepid Mathematician originally features the interviews, for which it was nominated for Science Borealis 2017 People’s Choice Awards Canada’s Favorite Science Online. He cites his book as being of interest to people curious about how mathematicians tick, scientists, or someone working in STEM. The book is accessible in language, with only a modicum amount of formulas. He picked subjects with a perspective toward diversity and inclusion, both gender and others, and topic matter. Each interview is recent and represents a broad swath of the current community. Each chapter briefly opens with text discussing the subject, along with biographical data and personal stories of his about them. Included are photos and other images.
