This report summarizes a workshop held by the National Cancer Policy Forum of the Institute of Medicine, which was convened in June 2011 to help further the development of innovative combination cancer therapies, determine barriers that may be impeding development and offer ways to overcome them, improve collaboration, and accelerate the development of promising combination investigational cancer therapies. The presentations addressed scientific challenges and opportunities in the codevelopment of investigational therapies; the regulatory environment for codevelopment, including the recent Food and Drug Administration draft guidance on the topic; cultural and legal issues that affect collaboration; lessons learned from codeveloping HIV and cancer combination therapies; and examples that can serve as models of collaboration.
