The National Research Council's National Library of Medicine launched a study to support the engagement of individuals from the computer science research community in meeting challenges posed by health care information technology to identify how today's computer-based methods and approaches might be applied more effectively to health care and how the limitations in these methods and approaches might be overcome through additional research and development. This report is from that committee, the Committee on Engaging the Computer Science Research Community in Health Care Informatics, which is made up of specialists in biomedical informatics, computer science and information technology, and health care who visited eight medical centers in the US and drew from other research to provide a foundation for further exploration of the issue and outline principles for change, research challenges, and recommendations.
