Gershenson (Judaic and Near Eastern studies, U. of Massachusetts, Amherst) examines the phenomenon of the Gesher Theater, a popular and innovative troupe of emigrant performers centered in Tel Aviv. The performances are bilingual, in Hebrew and Russian; this alone would cause comment. However, the troupe also rankles the Israeli media on occasion in their choices of plays and methods of presentation, largely because it simply does not do what is expected of an Israeli arts organization. Gershenson applies postcolonial theory to the history of Gesher and its reception, coming up with interesting innovations herself, including a new model of inter-ethnic relations.
