When my school district eliminated their kindergarten art program, parents and teachers were very upset. Having listened to me talk about the difference between art and craft for years, the kindergarten teachers searched for art lessons that were easy to teach, appropriate for their kids, and above all, fun. They found dozens of books with craft projects for children, but nothing that really uses their creativity as I did in Visual Art class. Most curriculum guides are written for K-5 level. There is a big difference between what is appropriate for a kindergartener compared to a fifth grader! The teachers worried that some lessons might be too challenging, uninteresting, or simply not suitable for five- and six-year-olds.
