HTML5 is the latest revision of the HTML standards. It represents a fairly radical break with previous incarnations of HTML. While supporting most earlier HTML features it introduces many new tags including ones for audio, video, and semantic information. It also introduces local data storage and custom attributes. This book covers the things a programmer needs to know to control the interaction of HTML5, CSS3 and jQuery. The first thing Campesato, author of 6 other books on related topics, does is to introduce the new tags and features of the HTML5. He then moves on to the use of CSS3 to customize the look of webpages, create complex visual effects, make use of scalable vector graphics (SVG) and create 2D and 3D animations. Programming jQuery, a multi-browser compatible widget toolkit built on top of JavaScript is covered in detail. Topics include using it to generate animations, access and modify the DOM and create GUI widgets like combo boxes and progress bars. A considerable part of the book is devoted to using jQuery, CSS3 and HTML5 on mobile devices. Android, iOS and Tizen devices are covered. There is also a chapter that details the use of HTML5's powerful canvas tag and a following chapter that goes into detail about using it to make interactive charts and graphs. The book comes with a DVD that contains all the source code and color graphics though the book uses only b&w figures. There are also 5 appendices on the DVD. At the end is a brief section with interviews with industry leaders. There is no bibliography. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
