When the Lower Connecticut River was threatened by thermal pollution from power plant cooling systems, scientists came to the rescue with the best tools of the late 1960s and early 1970s and warned those in charge that something should be done, if only in the form of careful and scientific monitoring. Thirty years after the initial report, we have the results of the careful work of a generation of observers and the increasingly effective technology of both monitoring and operating power plants. The results are not what the originators expected: much remains the same, but what has changed appears not to be related to the operation of the power station but to other influences such as entrainment and impingement. This volume contains the original report as well as the newer findings. Comparing the two is not only a study in the ecology of a vital river but also in the ways we have learned to conduct research.
