This volume gathers together nine lectures given between 1989-2005 in honor of the late medievalist Morton W. Bloomfield, by some of the most respected medieval scholars in the United States. Reflecting Bloomfield's major interests, many of the lectures look at aspects of late medieval literature, particularly Piers Plowman. Others expand upon Bloomfield's interest in medieval visions of the Apocalypse, especially in literature. The history of the transmission of ideas forms the basis for other articles. These have disparate origins from Augustine of Hippo, to Maimonides, to Norse poems with even a discussion of medieval influence on William Blake. Shortly after Morton Bloomfield's death in 1987, a number of his friends and colleagues sought a way to honor and preserve his memory.
