Willis (English, Drury U.) learned about the rumored love affair between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mrs. Lucy Mercer Rutherford, his wife's social secretary, from a 1966 memoir by a former White House press secretary. In this first published account of their longtime relationship, the author draws upon Mercer family members among other sources to sympathetically fill in details about the affair in historical context. She argues that discovery of the affair in 1918 influenced Eleanor's course as an activist. Photos are included. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
