First published in 1992, The Image Processing Handbook not only set the standard for professional references in this field, but also provided the first text truly accessible to undergraduate students and non-specialists. Each subsequent edition has reflected the continuing rapid advances in image processing, and the fourth edition is no exception. In fact, its broader scope, increased depth, and logical presentation make it, more than ever, a powerful teaching tool, essential reference, and handy companion for both new and experienced image processors and analysts.

Russ (materials science and engineering, North Carolina State U.-Raleigh) describes methods for improving the visual appearance of images to a human viewer, and for preparing images to measure features and structures present in them. The intent is to allow users of computer-based system to understand those methods provided in packaged software, and to program additions that may be needed for particular applications. He compares different algorithms that may be used for similar purposes, using a selection of representative pictures from light and electron microscopes and macroscopic, remote sensing, and astronomical images. No dates are noted for earlier editions. A companion CD-ROM is available at an exorbitant price. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
