This Russian language textbook represents a practical approach to foreign-language learning, based on communication in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The book is structured based on topics and conversational situations that gradually increase in complexity. Grammar is introduced along the way, rather than learned as a separate skill. Vocabulary is introduced alongside subject matter about mainstream Russian culture for conversation. This second edition includes updates on Russian society. Rather than reading pre-generated dialogues, students are given roleplay situations or conversational topics for discussion in Russian. Listening, writing, solo, pair, and group activities are all used in regular assignments. The goal was to include all the grammatical structures typically contained in an elementary Russian textbook, in a structure more similar to the way language learning happens for communication purposes in immersive settings. The author has piloted the program extensively with students at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The textbook is supported by a student activities manual for writing exercises, and an online site with an audio reading of the textbook, exercises, flashcards, self-tests, and a system to allow practice typing on a Russian homophonic keyboard. A resource kit is available to instructors, with audio listening exercises, video interviews of Russians in Russian, and cultural videos keyed to the chapter topics. A customizable electronic activities manual is also available to instructors, which supports online teaching formats. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
