This textbook can be used in undergraduate and beginning graduate courses in public health and health education. Information presented is consistent with the core competences for entry-level practitioners described by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. The text can also be used as a resource when studying for national certification exams. The first two chapters overview theory and planning models in health education and health promotion. Later chapters describe specific theories and models from the behavioral and social sciences, such as the health belief model, social cognitive theory, and Freire's model of adult education, and explain how to use these theories when designing programs in various settings. Each discussion of theory is accompanied by planning, evaluation, and application activities. This second edition contains new case studies and application exercises which require students to retrieve additional applications from the literature. Other learning features include key terms and concepts, boxed quotations by theorists, and b&w photos. Sharma is professor of public health and health promotion at the University of Cincinnati. Romas is professor emeritus of Minnesota State University. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
