Description

In a cultural history of Asian American activism and identity during the late 1960 and early 1970s, Maeda (ethnic studies, U. of Colorado-Boulder) traces ideas about race, ethnicity, nations, and empires in social movement cultural and formal cultural productions, in order to recuperate a set of political actions that brought into being the category of Asian American. Racism and imperialism were the twin Chains of Babylon, he argues, and cultural critiques of them informed the construction of Asian American identity as a multi-ethnic formation committed to inter-racial and trans-national solidarity. Among his topics are Hayakawa and assimilation versus Third World solidarity at San Francisco State College, Black Panthers and Red Guards, and solidarity by opposition to the Viet Nam War.
