Using the concept of positive ethics to encourage psychologists to live up to their highest standards and aiming to shift ethics away from the concept of wrongdoing, Knapp, a psychologist, and Vandecreek (professional psychology, Wright State U., Fairborn, Ohio) outline the ethical standards that psychologists must follow in their professional activities. The standards are based on the American Psychological Association's "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" and other relevant state and federal laws. They use three models for application: the ethics acculturation model, the five-step decision-making model, and the quality enhancement model (expanded in this edition). This edition has also new material on the positive impact of continuing education programs, consideration of the effect of emotional problems and nonrational decision making on professional competence, and discussion of the challenges of delivering psychological services using electronic media. It takes into account ethical issues such as the relationship among psychology, religion, and sexual identity; the roles of psychologists in military interrogations; and challenges to boundaries and privacy created by social media. It also addresses the better understanding of defining competence and clarifies standards of conduct in nonhealth psychology areas such as life coaching.
