Bustard began his career with the National Archives and Record Administration, Washington, DC, in 1985, where he has curated several major exhibits. His book is based on a June-September 2012 exhibit held at the National Archives. Drawing from the millions of immigration case files at the Archives, the exhibit and text tell the stories of some 25 immigrants entering, leaving, or staying in America from the 1880s through WWII. The materials also explore the attachment of immigrants to family and community, and some American perspectives on immigrants and citizenship. Each individual's story is illustrated with photographs of the person, immigration documents, and other objects of importance, such as letters and personal possessions. No subject index is provided.
