The cross-referenced entries in this two-volume encyclopedia of depression and depressive disorders are written in nontechnical language for non-specialists, patients, families, and practitioners. They span the breadth of recent and classic research on causes and risk factors, conceptual frameworks and key figures, symptoms and diagnosis, prevention, conventional pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, and alternative therapies and lifestyle approaches such as diet, supplements, Chinese medicine, and meditation. Many entries explain biological factors, brain anatomy and brain chemistry, and the role of the endocrine system. There is also material on practical issues such as insurance parity and types of treatment providers. Entries range in length from half a page to four pages. Each entry contains a bibliography of print and electronic references, and electronic and mail contacts for patient and professional organizations. Sidebars offer interesting information on topics such as acupressure points, famous people with mood disorders, and tips for dealing with holiday blues. Each volume begins with an alphabetical list of topical entries as well as a quick reference of all topics in outline form. The encyclopedia also contains a master list of 79 organizational resources, and a timeline of research on depression from ancient times to the present. Andrews is a freelance journalist specializing in health and psychology. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
