This report was produced by the Committee on the Prevention of Mental Disorders and Substance Abuse Among Children, Youth, and Young Adults: Research Advances and Promising Interventions, which is a project of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. The report synthesizes current research on prevention, which emphasizes the avoidance of risk factors, as was their charge, but add to their focus the emerging field of mental health promotion, which strives to promote supportive family, school, and community environments and imbue in young people protective factors for enhancing well-being and providing the tools to avoid adverse emotions and behaviors.
