Rudner (a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and author of Partings ) analyzes the controversy over a disease, brucellosis, a bovine bacterial disease transmitted during reproduction. Yellowstone's buffalo carry antibodies to brucella , indicating their exposure to it, exposure they first got, maintains Rudner, through contact with domestic cattle. But buffalo, the author asserts, do not carry the disease, only the antibody indicating exposure; nor has there ever been a known instance of transmission from buffalo to cattle. Still, cattleman express concern their animals will be infected by buffalo (highly unlikely says Rudner) and that, as a result, their respective states will no longer be declared "brucellosis free." The fight pits ranchers against environmentalists and statists against federalists. Lacks notes and an index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
