Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder arising from degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain. A September 2002 conference brought together neurologists, neurosurgeons, developmental biologists, neuropathologists, and molecular biologists to focus on the dopaminergic system from a developmental perspective, with the objective of improving the understanding of how dopaminergic neurons form, how they mature and respond to genetic and environmental factors, and how they may be regenerated. Papers from the conference, presented here, describe the clinical syndrome and examine molecular, cellular, and organism issues, and discuss research in the convergence of cell genesis and cell transfer.
