Conducted by the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Department of Transportation in response to a Congressional request, this report studies the impact of statutory regulation of automotive fuel economy standards on motor vehicle safety, the economic performance of the U.S. automotive sector, employment in the sector, and the auto consumer. They also examine the impact of imposing different requirements on domestic and nondomestic fleets. Their findings lead to a number of recommendations that, on the whole, point towards a regulatory regime modified by differing standards dependent on vehicle attributes such as weight and incorporating fuel economy credit trades.
