This text developed out of a course taught by Krieger (Wellesley College) called "Globalization and the Nation-State." It primarily is concerned with the ways globalization impacts the role and function of states and the relative influence of states on their external political environment. Among the major topics discussed are alternative interpretations of American hegemonic power, European traditions of social protection and social democracy as illustrative of the differences between Europe and the United States, East Asian government strategies for economic development. Krieger also spends considerable time exploring world politics in the wake of the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
