In a small Polish town in the 1920s, author Kluger (1921-2011), a Jew, grew up with Karol Wojtyla, a Catholic boy who later became Pope John Paul II. Kluger tells the story of their friendship from childhood into old age, and also highlights his own survival during WWII, when he escaped internment at Auschwitz and fought with the Allies. The author stresses the role of their friendship in Pope John Paul II's decision to combat anti-Semitism in the Catholic Church, chronicling the Pope's pilgrimages to Jewish holy sites and the Vatican's eventual recognition of Israel. The book includes b&w photos from personal collections and news sources. It is translated by Matthew Sherry. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
