Mason, an economics editor for the BBC, considers how the near collapse of free-market capitalism in last few years has sparked revolutions around the world. He argues that along with that collapse, renewed desire for individual freedom, changing consciousness about what freedom is, technological innovation, and other factors are fueling this new global revolution. He links disparate world events, revolutions, movements and other social formations in an attempt to provide a big picture without presenting a "theory of everything." What he does present is way of understanding how the relevant conditions--technology, mass psychology, neoliberal economics, unrest, urbanization--gave rise to certain revolutionary events. It is essentially a work of journalism and grows out of a blog Mason created in 2011 to document and contextualize these events. While he connects contemporary revolutionaries with those of the 1960s, as well as his way of doing journalism with the New Journalism of that era, he emphasizes the unprecedented role of the Internet and collective journalism.
