The defining reference work in immunology today is now available in an entirely new text! This edition places greater emphasis on molecular mechanisms underlying cellular function and physiology, and includes outstanding new chapters on neuroimmunology and immunotherapy...completely updated coverage of immune suppression and regulatory T cells...and new and expanded chapters on lymphocytes, the immunology of aging, autoimmunity, and more. A free CD-ROM provides one-click access to all of the content and illustrations from the text--plus Internet links to PubMed and 50 other sites. The fourth edition (1999) is cited in Brandon-Hill . Now unable to squeeze itself into the 800 pages of the first edition (1984), the field is represented here in double that number of pages. After two introductory chapters, contributions in the next three sections discuss the principal cellular components of the immune system and the context in which they act. A new section on antigen processing and presentation is followed by chapters considering the regulation of the immune response, the cytokines, and how the immune system mediates its functions and deals with infectious agents and diseases. Editor Paul (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) has been with the project since the first edition of this comprehensive one-volume reference, and he leads an international cast of contributors.
