From the mid-fifteenth century to 1856 when the processions ceased, water-borne pageantry on the River Thames was an important and colourful part of London life. Kenneth Nicholls Palmer goes back to the origins of these splendours and traces both the history of the events and the whereabouts of the surviving artifacts in the possession of forty-nine Livery Companies whose archives he has researched over several years. Apart from banners and pennants bearing the arms of Companies and Masters, there are carvings, uniforms, bargemasters' badges, cannons, ewers and silverware in their collections which the author has photographed.
