In this supplement to his American history text Give Me Liberty! An American History, Fourth Edition, Foner (history, Columbia U.) collects 100 primary sources on the theme of American freedom, how it has been defined in history, and its many dimensions, including political, religious, economic, and personal freedom. Presented in chronological order by time period, the documents date from 1528 to 1883 and consist of presidential proclamations, letters by runaway slaves, court cases, manifestos, newspaper ads, bills, and other sources by people like Adam Smith, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Noah Webster, James Madison, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They address ideas like war, economic change, territorial expansion, social protest movements, international involvement, slavery, indentured servitude, and the subordinate position of women. They are mostly excerpts and include introductions on their historical context and discussion questions about their arguments. This edition has about 30 new sources, including those that illustrate how religious ideas and practices and fights over religious liberty have affected the evolution of freedom.
