Madeleine L'Engle, as a writer of skillful and popular books for educated American children, has been a much-loved and influential figure for many US authors. Leonard S. Marcus is an experienced writer about children's books and their authors; as editor, he has collected here a set of memories of L'Engle by those who knew her, including contributors who have been influenced in many ways by that contact. The book is nicely produced, and begins with an introduction by the author giving L'Engle's biography and ending with his personal encounter with her as an interviewer. The rest of the book is divided into thematic sections, depending on the editor's sense of the core subject of each contributor's piece. The sections are: Madeleine in the making (memories of her early life), as writer, as matriarch, as mentor, as friend, and as icon. Well-known writers who have contributed pieces to this collection include Judy Blume and Jane Yolen. Other contributors include a wide range of people: publishers, members of her family, a mathematician consulted on A Wrinkle in Time, a canon of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. She is especially remembered here both as a writer and as one with interests in the spiritual dimensions of her work. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
