From 1830 to 1880 London based publisher John Gould published a series of books on birds containing some 3,000 hand-colored lithographs, by artists and colorists including Gould's wife Elizabeth, the humorist Edward Lear, and the German painter Joseph Wolf. Lambourne has chosen 413 gorgeous color illustrations from Gould's ten most important works, each of which is given a chapter of its own. An overall introduction offers biographies of Gould and the team of workers he assembled, while every picture is accompanied by a caption based on quotations from the original text as well as the most recent scientific information about the subject's habitat, behavior, and range. 10.75x14.25".
