In a series of 17 essays penned between October 2001 and September 2004, Satloff (executive director, Washington Institute for Near East Policy) puts forth his view of how U.S. public diplomacy should approach Arabs and Muslims of the Middle East. Satloff believes that the American public diplomacy should eschew the "obviously self-defeating" notion of changing policy towards the region and should instead focus on helping non-Islamist forces, even if they hate our policies, win the battle of ideas against the Islamist conception of how to organize society. He critiques current approaches to public diplomacy and offers his own alternative. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
