This handbook for high school biology teachers stems from the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), a research and development organization established in 1958 to improve the quality of biology education at all levels. The first edition of this book was published in 1960, and after the third edition was published in 1978, the book went out of print. This fourth edition is updated to reflect recent developments in the field. Section I explains how people learn and outlines the six unifying principles that should be considered in any biology course. Section II defines science as inquiry, and offers six thought experiments about biology content that highlight different aspects of scientific inquiry, with guidelines on how to use them. Inquiry topics include seed germination and natural selection. Section III gives ideas for teaching controversial topics such as evolution, human reproduction, the use of animals, and DNA. Section IV, the book's practical core, shows how to create a culture of inquiry in the classroom, with advice on classroom management, collaborative learning, science notebooks, assessment, and selecting programs. The final section looks at the past and future of biology teaching. Appendices provide advice on the high school biology lab and safety in the classroom.
