Based upon material presented at an April 2005 conference sponsored by the Science, Technology and Economic Policy board for the National Research Council, these papers describe major projects underway around the world that support innovation and compare them to similar projects in the US. Contributors describe the challenges of innovation on a worldwide scale, examining drivers of growth in China and India and new national models in Germany, Finland and Canada, along with new models of innovation applied in Taiwan, Japan and China. The remaining panel covers the evolution of technology partnerships in the US, describing the case of supercomputers, the Advanced technology Program, and privately funded R&D, closing with a discussion roundtable on conditions for success. The result is a good review of policies and programs that is accessible to policy makers as well as specialists. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
