About 41 million Americans under age 65 lack health insurance in any single year. This report tallies some of the most clearly identifiable economic and social costs of uninsurance, presenting aggregate estimates in monetary terms of the costs of health care provided to those who lack health insurance that is borne by individuals, public and private programs, and by providers that subsidize uncompensated care; the value of additional years of healthier life that would be gained if health insurance were extended to everyone; and the cost of the additional health care that would be provided to the uninsured if they gained health insurance.
