The papers collected in this first of two volumes were first presented at the Research Conference on Racial Trends in the US, which was organized following discussions between the National Research Council and the President's (Clinton) Initiative on Race. The former organization, together with the Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (to which the editors belong), are responsible for the publication.
